For those who have been inspired to learn more about their family history by the recent commemorations of Remembrance Day and the centenary of the ending of the First World War, East Riding Libraries run family history helpdesks.

The free sessions are at:

Bridlington Central Library
First Saturday of the month, 10am to 12 noon

Driffield Centre
First Wednesday of each month, 3 to 5pm

Haltemprice Library and Customer Service Centre, East Riding Leisure Haltemprice
First Wednesday of each month, 10am to 12.30pm

Hessle Centre
Second Friday of each month, 10am to 1pm

Hornsea Library
Third Tuesday of each month, 10am to 1pm

Willerby Library
Thursday 5 to 6.30pm and Saturday 10am to 12 noon

Withernsea Centre
Second Tuesday of each month, 2 to 4pm

There is no need to book a place in advance; people can simply turn up and trained volunteers will assist in tracing their family history, with a particular emphasis on those who fought in the two World Wars, if requested.

Ancestry.co.uk and Findmypast are free to use in all East Riding Libraries, and East Riding Archives in the Treasure House in Beverley.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture, said : "Quite understandably, there has been a huge upsurge in interest from people wanting to research family members who fought in the major conflicts of the twentieth century, and these family history helpdesks are an easy and interesting way to do just that."
