East Riding of Yorkshire Council is warning drivers that major overnight road improvements will be starting tonight on the A166 westbound at Garrowby Hill.

Resurfacing work will start on Monday, 21 May and will see Garrowby Hill closed to all westbound traffic (ie traffic heading towards York) between 19.00 and 06.00 Monday to Friday for five weeks, weather permitting. Eastbound traffic will not be affected.

The diversion route for all traffic to York is via B1248 from Wetwang to Bainton, then the A614 to Shiptonthorpe and the A1079 to York.

The road closure is necessary to ensure the safety of the workforce.

The work is the final stage of the larger improvement scheme along the A166, costing £1.9 million in total. The work is being carried out on behalf of the council by CEMEX UK, with funding secured after a successful bid by the council to the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership's Local Growth Fund, and has seen work already completed at Stamford Bridge and Fridaythorpe.

An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said : "We do apologise in advance for the inconvenience that this overnight road closure will inevitably cause. We have carefully considered all options for these works at Garrowby Hill, and we feel that the overnight closure is the best option, to cause the least inconvenience.

"The works are essential, to ensure that this key road remains in its safest condition for road users for many years to come."
