East Riding Festival of Words deemed a success - and will return in 2019

The first East Riding Festival of Words has proved very popular with those who attended the varied programme of over 40 events, held in seven venues between 18 and 21 October.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has revealed that ticket sales increased this year, in comparison to previous literature festivals, with an increase of 20% based on occupancy at each event.

Around 450 people completed questionnaires at the events, and the responses were overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of those attending saying they would recommend the festival to other friends, family, and colleagues.

The inaugural Festival in Bridlington, Beverley and Goole included The Dead Good Day (featuring the grittiest crime authors); The Next Big Thing, looking at brand new writers; a day looking at the importance of location in literature; and talks by Val Wood and Wendy Mitchell.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture, said : "I am delighted that the research we commissioned into the Festival of Words has proved how popular and successful the event was, with its superb mix of talks and events.

"I am particularly pleased to be able to announce that the Festival of Words will definitely return in 2019. We will unveil the programme and the dates in due course.

"Our research has shown that the majority of those who attended this year were library service members, and from the local area, so we will now decide whether we need to engage more people from outside the area, or simply expand the event with even bigger names. It's a great position to be in!"
