Peggy & Alex Caird

Mike Wilson, Local Author and Historian

The Peggy and Alex Caird was a Mersey class lifeboat, and was numbered 12-001. She arrived in Bridlington on 15th December, 1988, and her first service was on 15th January, 1989. This class of lifeboat had a watertight wheelhouse which enabled them to self-right in only six seconds. There is seating for six crew and a jump seat for a doctor. They were powered by two 285hp Caterpillar 3208T turbo-charged marine diesels which allow a cruising speed of 15.75 knots with a top speed of 17 knots. Peggy and Alex Caird has an aluminium hull. The vessel was paid for by a legacy of Miss Mildred Caird, and cost £574,084. She was launched 100 times and saved 19 lives.
