A visit to the Eastfield garden centre in Bridlington is always a pleasure. This week a glossy free magazine caused amusement.
I always think of eating as a necessity and reading a great pleasure so when I found a free glossy magazine on offer I picked one up. It contained some very useful articles and lovely photographs and... recipes.
As most of my lady friends would agree finding something different to put on the menu can be a nightmare. The pictures of healthy vegetables looked lovely with a recipe for several different sauces.
In bold letters it read Sweat and Sour Sauce - Have you read it properly?
It should have been "Sweet and Sour Sauce" so my imagination went mad. A cook who is going berserk trying to keep up with the pressure of work, madly mopping his brow and wringing the cloth into the sauce! Yuk! Sweet and Sour Prawns will never be the same again.
Taking the magazine across to the staff behind the counter I pointed the error out, mainly because I found it so funny. When you first read it your mind can pass over the mistake and that was what happened when they read it out.
I know how easy it is to make an error, especially when tired or my fingers hit the wrong key on the keyboard. It is best to have someone else check it before it goes out to the public. I very often find a mistake after I have printed a page and wonder how on earth I missed it. The spellchecker can be useless at times as well but my dictionary is usually at hand.
Returning to the magazine, I finished reading it at home and must admit some thorough proofreading should have been done. Seasonal gardening jobs are listed as "spiking, sacrificing, logging" and so on. Have you spotted the mistake? I hope it was meant to be "scarifying" not "sacrificing". Another vivid image came to mind of Black magic being carried out at the end of the garden!
Ah Well! Nobody's perfect and the articles have caused a lot of laughter. Free!
