An Introduction to Bridlington Archery Club
Bridlington Archers can often be found drinking tea and coffee and eating cake and biscuits at Burton Agnes Recreation Ground. Oh Yes, and shooting our bows and arrows as well!
Our club consists of more than 50 members, most of who turn up every Sunday morning, even throughout the winter months, to shoot at targets, set out at varied distances. We also shoot outside on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during the Summer and indoors, at Brandesburton Community Centre, during the Winter.
The types of bow used within the club are Longbow, Olympic Recurve Bow and Compound Bow. Our membership is a good mix of male and female archers as well as a growing complement of juniors.
Several of our members regularly enter open competitions at other clubs throughout
Yorkshire and sometimes further afield. We also hold our own annual open indoor competition, which for the past few years has taken place at Bridlington Sports Centre. In November 2007 we attracted well over 100 competitors to this event, including members of the National and County archery teams.
We hold regular competitions within the club at our Sunday morning sessions as well as sending results to compete in postal competitions. There are also a few fun competitions such as the annual Pork Pie shoot, in which the archers shoot at an image of a knight on horseback. The winner receives a beautifully turned wooden pork pie, mounted on a plinth.
To become a member of Bridlington Archers, you must hold a current GNAS card or complete our course of instruction which we hold twice yearly and which takes six Sunday morning sessions to complete. These courses are well subscribed and there may be a waiting list.
