Bridlington Priory East Side

Bridlington Priory

The East end looks like some strongly fortified castle with its massive buttresses. These immense buttresses enclose the lower part of the two western piers of the former central tower. Within the buttress to the South there still remains the spiral staircase which once led up to the bell-chamber. The East window was inserted and the wall rebuilt during the nineteenth century restoration.

Before leaving this place the visitor should turn East and note the iron railings of the churchyard boundary. Some idea of the great length of the original Priory can be imagined when it is realised that the East wall of the Choir extended as far as the railings.

Towards the North side of the East wall was erected in 1973 a stone structure of restrained design to house the boiler of the Priory's extensive heating system.

Before going down the steps to the South side note, at the level of the aisle roof, the remains of a column and arch marking the beginning of the South Transept, the line of which is discernible at the foot of the steps.
