Residents are being invited to take part in the latest energy-switching auction as part of an East Riding of Yorkshire Council scheme which has already generated millions of pounds-worth of savings for households.

The council's YORSwitch scheme is part of the national iChoosr collective-switching initiative in which energy suppliers can submit bids to an auction and the lowest prices are then offered to all the households which register their interest.

For many residents, this leads to savings on their energy costs by changing to the winning supplier's exclusive fuel tariff.

The latest auction is open and several thousand people have already registered their interest.

In the most recent round, nearly 8,000 people registered with YORSwitch and, even with energy prices rising, average savings per household were £190 a year.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council regularly attracts high numbers of participants, with more than 75,000 registrations and 17,400 switchers to date.

Since the scheme started in 2013, a total of £4.17million has been saved by residents through YORSwitch.

Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "Households in the East Riding who haven't yet taken advantage of this are still able to access the exclusive deals secured through the collective by simply signing up via the website.

"Now is the ideal time for residents, especially those on standard tariffs, to switch. They could secure a great rate for the year ahead at a time when many will now be feeling the impact of the standard variable tariff increases announced in recent months.

"People are sent personal offers after each auction and these detail how much they could be saving, if applicable, against their current deal. There is no obligation to accept the personal offer but if they do it's easy to switch and the new provider takes care of the whole process.

"Any savings are better in residents' pockets and this is money which potentially be spent with local businesses, supporting the local East Riding economy."

How it works

Register for free to express your interest at www.eastriding.gov.uk/yorswitch or telephone (01482) 393939.

An auction will take place on 10 October.

Offers will be sent out from Monday 23 October, based on the usage information submitted, and people will have until midnight on 28 November to decide if they want to switch.

You can register post auction and still reap the benefits from the prices secured.

All tariffs available to scheme members are market-leading against Ofgem averages on the day of the auction when compared to core tariffs available on the open market.

Average savings are calculated by taking the average amount where a saving can be made for each registrant based on the consumption/spend data submitted on registration.
