A family fun day will celebrate the opening of a brand new 3G all-weather pitch, boxing gym and bar and function room at the sports centre in Gypsey Road on Saturday, 5 August, from 10am.
The centre was successfully transferred to Bridlington Club for Young People (Bridlington CYP) by East Riding of Yorkshire Council last summer, following the completion of the new £25 million East Riding Leisure Bridlington development.
The newly-named Bridlington CYP Sports Centre would have become surplus to the council's operational requirements, but an agreement was quickly reached with the club to transfer it as a community asset.
Since then a new 3G pitch was installed, thanks to funding from the Football Association, the Premier League and a commuted sums grant from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The centre will now continue as a sports and community hub, supporting opportunities for increased sports participation in Bridlington for all ages.
Councillor Richard Burton, cabinet portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "Bridlington CYP Sports Centre is a great example of a successful community asset transfer and what can be achieved when local organisations and national partners work together."The open day will provide the perfect platform for the centre to showcase its facilities, including the 3G sports pitch, and will also mark the official handover of the centre from the council to the community."
The family fun open day will include training sessions by the Burlington Jackdaws under 12s and the Wildcat Girls, a CYP Ladies .v. Hull City eleven exhibition match, a boxing display and sparring session, a pre-season Bridlington Rovers match, a basketball fun session, a netball match and a fun session with Bridlington Rangers.
The event will also include a bouncy castle, refreshments available from the new café bar and an appearance by special guest and Hull boxer Tommy Coyle.
Jared Jones, sports facilities manager of Bridlington CYP, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to use the centre as a focal point for various sporting activities."
