For the second year, Beverley has been shortlisted in the Coach Friendly Destination category at the British Coach Tourism Awards.
The town narrowly missed out on last year's accolade but is back in contention for 2017 after winning judges over with a submission that highlighted the town itself, the increase in coach numbers to Beverley since a campaign was launched by tourism partnership, Visit Hull & East Yorkshire (VHEY), in August 2015, the success of the Beverley Festival of Christmas and the coaches that came to the event as well as positive testimonials, publicity and social media.
Beverley will go up against Bournemouth, Plymouth, Poole, Southport and Wells for the title at the awards ceremony to be held at the National Motorcycle Museum, in Birmingham, on Wednesday, 22 March.
Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "Beverley is one of the most vibrant market towns in the country and is a popular destination for visitors."It is very exciting that Beverley has been shortlisted again in the Coach Friendly Destination category. It is always pleasing when the work of VHEY to promote tourism is recognised by the industry."The town's coach offer includes a dedicated campaign aimed at bringing new coach operators and their customers to Beverley, as well as providing a better service for those coach operators and customers already visiting the town. Since its launch we have seen a steady increase in numbers."It is the council's aim, through VHEY, to secure return visits and overnight stays in the town and thereby create favourable trading conditions for businesses to maximise on."
